Jeffrey "Jeff" Arch (* December 1954 in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania as Jeffrey Gurkoff ) is an American screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Jeffrey Arch was born in Harrisburg , Pennsylvania , the youngest son of Eugene Gurkoff and Louise Grass . He grew up with his two older brothers, Joseph and Jon, in the Harrisburg Jewish community. After graduating from Harrisburg Academy in 1972, he studied film and theater production at Emerson College from 1972 to 1976. Arch began his film career as assistant camera to Conrad L. Hall . But he showed little interest in the camera system and rather in writing, which is why he oriented himself there. He wrote until he was thirty. However, when he received scathing reviews after performing his off-Broadway play For Sale and was quickly removed, he was so depressed that he decided to stop writing for three years.

However, he continued to write and was able to celebrate his biggest success to date with his first produced screenplay Sleepless in Seattle , a romantic comedy starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan . In 1994 he received not only an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay , but also a nomination for the British Academy Film Award in the category Best Original Screenplay .

Jeffrey Arch is married to Debra Magin, with whom he has two children.
