The Fort Meade , 40 kilometers north of Washington, DC and just south of Baltimore in Fort Meade , Anne Arundel County , Maryland located, is an agency of the United States Armed Forces . The site was named after George Gordon Meade , a general in the Union Forces in the Civil War .

Among other things, it is the seat of the American secret service NSA . Their site is also known as the Crypto City .

  • In 1956, when the NSA already had buildings in Arlington Hall in Virginia and Washington ( Naval Security Station ), construction began on the complex in Fort Meade. Soon the facilities were limited to Fort Meade, which is still the seat of the NSA today.

Fort Meade is in close proximity to Baltimore-Washington International Airport and Tipton Airport . The base is also served by several interchanges on the Patuxent Freeway and Baltimore-Washington Parkway .
