Cryptomycota

The division of living beings into systematics is a continuous subject of research. Different systematic classifications exist side by side and one after the other. The taxon treated here has become obsolete due to new research or is not part of the group systematics presented in the German-language Wikipedia.

Cryptomycota (with crypto - hidden and mycota - mushrooms) is a suggested name for a basal group of mushrooms (Fungi), which should represent the sister group to all other mushrooms.

In contrast to the fungi, no cell walls containing chitin or cellulose could be detected for Cryptomycota . The cells identified so far are 3 to 5 µm long, egg-shaped cells which have a flagellum as mobile zoospores or which sit on other cells such as diatoms as flagelleless cells or possibly represent permanent forms (cysts) as free, flagelless forms . How exactly these forms are related in a life cycle and whether other forms exist is currently unknown.

Taxonomy and systematics

The group was identified using sequence analysis of ribosomal DNA . The only genus described within the Cryptomycota is the parasitic fungus Rozella . Since other Cryptomycota have not yet been grown in culture , all knowledge about them comes from analyzes on samples obtained from nature. DNA sequences associated with the Cryptomycota have been found in aqueous samples from a variety of sources, including marine sediments, fresh water, sulfurous springs, and soil.

After Adl 2012 the group will no longer exist. The genus Rozella forms a sub-taxon of the Nucletmycea there and cannot be incorporated into the fungi.
