Denis Matthews
Denis Matthews (born February 27, 1919 in Coventry , † December 25, 1988 in Birmingham ) was a British pianist, music teacher and scholar.
Matthews studied composition with William Alwyn at the Royal Academy of Music and was a piano student of Harold Craxton . In 1939 he made his debut as a pianist in London. From 1940 to 1946 he served in the Royal Air Force . During this time, a recording of Beethoven's horn sonata with horn player Dennis Brain was made (1944) .
After the war, Matthews went on concert tours as a piano soloist and worked with the Griller Quartet and the Amadeus Quartet . The focus of his repertoire was on the composers of the Viennese classical period . Along with Myra Hess , Louis Kentner and Frank Merrick , he was one of the first to record piano works by John Field . From 1971 to 1984 Matthews was a music professor at Newcastle University . He published u. a. Books about Beethoven, Arturo Toscanini and the piano music of Johannes Brahms . In 1966 his autobiography In Pursuit of Music was published .
