Cublai, gran kan de 'Tartari (dt. Kublai, Great Khan of the Tatars ) is a "dramma eroicomico" in two acts by Antonio Salieri based on a text by Giovanni Battista Casti , which was not performed during Salieri's lifetime.
The world premiere in German translation by Cornelia Boese took place in June 1998 at the Mainfranken Theater Würzburg under the direction of Johan van Slageren. The virtuoso role of the Bengali Princess Alzima was performed by the coloratura soprano Diana Damrau , who is now in international demand . In November 2007, Virgin Records released her album with arias by Salieri, Mozart and Righini , on which she presented herself with two arias from Cublai . The overture to Cublai can now also be found on concert programs, for example played by the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the London Mozart Players .
Salieri's heroic-comic opera was written between 1786 and 1788. The satirical libretto Castis bluntly describes the grievances at the Russian Tsar's court. Due to a surprising alliance between Austria and Russia in 1788, Salieri was no longer allowed to see his work on the opera stage; the censorship made a performance impossible.
