Culloden is in black and white twisted British television film by Peter Watkins from the year 1964 about the Battle of Culloden ( 1746 ).

action

Culloden is a detailed study of the Battle of Culloden and the brutal incursions of the English government forces against the native Scottish population after the victory against the Jacobites .

background

Culloden was the first feature film by director Peter Watkins and was made for the British broadcaster BBC . The basis was the book of the same name by the historian John Prebble . As in his later films, Watkins used stylistic devices such as interviews, voice-over commentary and recordings filmed with handheld cameras to give the feature film a documentary feel. In addition, he cast the roles exclusively with amateur actors. Watkins' intention was to create a visual reminiscence of the recordings of the Vietnam War that were then seen on television .

Culloden first aired on British television on December 15, 1964 and on German television on April 4, 1969 .

Reviews

“Impressive depiction of a battle between the English and Scots, in which Peter Watkins anticipates elements of his production The War Game , which was created two years later : The event is designed as a fictional report and accompanied by a commentator and statements from those involved. A harrowing charge against the war. "

DVD release

Culloden was released on DVD in the UK and France in 2003 and in the US in 2006 .
