Curraghs Wildlife Park is a wildlife park in The Curraghs (also: Ballaugh Curraghs ) a wetland in the northwest of the Isle of Man .

The park is owned by the Isle of Man Government and administered by the Department of Tourism and Leisure .

history

After the government tried in the 1930s to upgrade the former peat extraction area by planting New Zealand flax , the park was founded in 1963. The basis was the “Curraghs Acquisition Act”, whereby the government acquired approximately 200 acres (81 hectares) of land, which was divided into 160 acres (65 hectares) as a nature reserve and 40 acres (16 hectares) as a wildlife park. Originally only 26 acres (11 hectares) in size, the park was formally opened on July 23, 1965 by Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man , Ronald Garvey . The animal population includes around 100 animal species from all over the world, which are preferably adapted to wetlands. The animals are kept in aviaries with passage options for visitors.

15 acres (6 ha) of the park remain undeveloped to introduce visitors to the diversity of habitats. Bogs , moor grass meadows , open peat , birch groves and grassland are on trails as habitats presented. In addition to the usual walking trails, there is also a canopy path and a butterfly path .

In 2005 the zoo hosted the annual meeting of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums to mark the 40th anniversary of the Ballaugh Curraghs Wildlife Park . In 2009 the park was awarded a prize for its educational work in schools by the "Biaza" ("small collection award for" Best Education Project with schools "), which was presented at Knowsley Hall on Merseyside .

"The Curragh" was placed under protection under the Ramsar Convention as a "wetland site of international importance".
