Cuthbert Butler

Cuthbert Butler OSB, also Edward Cuthbert Butler (born May 6, 1858 in Dublin , † April 1, 1934 in London ) was an English historian, Benedictine and abbot in Downside Monastery .

biography

Cuthbert Edward Butler entered the Downside Benedictine monastery in 1876, whose school he had attended. He was ordained a priest in 1884 and worked as a teacher in Downside in the following years. From 1888 to 1892 he was the head of the school. In 1896, Cuthbert Butler took over the management of Benet House , the Benedictine study house at Cambridge University that was newly established by Downside Abbey . In 1904 he returned to Downside, where he was elected second abbot of the monastery in 1906. From 1914 to 1921 he was President of the English Benedictine Congregation. In 1922 he resigned from his post as abbot of Downside Monastery and moved to the Downside-dependent Ealing Priory (London), where he remained until his death.

As a researcher, Cuthbert Butler made a name for himself through his work on monasticism in the old church and through his history of the First Vatican Council . In recognition of his achievements, he received an honorary doctorate from Trinity College Dublin in 1908 .
