The Cyanidiales are an order of unicellular red algae . They live in volcanic areas in very acidic and moderately hot springs (pH 0.2 to 4, up to 56 ° C). There are 7 known species (as of July 2018).
According to molecular genetic data, the Cyanidiales are probably the most original eukaryotic algae , which separated from the other red algae almost 1.4 billion years ago. At that time, apart from red algae, there were only cyanobacteria as photosynthetic organisms. These cannot thrive at pH <5. Even today, the Cyanidiales are the only phototrophic microorganisms in their habitat .
Each cell contains only one nucleus , one chloroplast and one mitochondrion .
Systematics
The order Cyanidiales was established in 1962 by Tyge Ahrengot Christensen . It is divided into two families:
- Family Cyanidiaceae , with two genera
- Cyanidioschyzone , with the only kind of Cyanidioschyzone merolae
- Cyanidium , of two types
- Family Galdieriaceae, with one genus:
- Galdieria , with four species
