Cylicodiscus gabunensis grows as a very large, semi- evergreen tree up to 60 meters high. The trunk diameter reaches 1.5–3 meters. There are buttresses trained and only sometimes smaller buttress roots or are ribbing present. The brownish to greyish bark is coarse, scaly and flakes off with small plates. The trunk of young specimens is reinforced with short thorns .

The alternate, short-stalked leaves are bipinnate with 2–4 leaflets, each with 5–10 short-stalked, mostly alternate and glabrous leaflets . The petiole with a gland at the tip is up to 2 centimeters long, the short leaflet stalks 2–3 millimeters. The egg-shaped to elliptical leaflets are 5–10 centimeters long, up to 5 centimeters wide, with entire margins and pointed to pointed. The young leaves are reddish. The stipules are usually missing.

There are terminal or axillary, hairy and Multiflora spike-like, traubig- panicles inflorescences formed. The hermaphrodite, almost sessile and very small flowers are five-fold with a double flower cover . The small, slightly reddish, slightly hairy outside, cup-shaped, 1.5 millimeter long calyx is minimally serrated. The free, flabby petals are whitish to yellowish and up to 3 millimeters long. There are 10 free, protruding stamens . The pedicle elongated ovary is medium constantly with a slender pen . There is a discus .

Up to 60–90 centimeters long and 4.5–5 centimeters wide, many-seeded and unilaterally opening, red-brown, somewhat scaly, leathery legumes are formed. The winged, flat and elongated seeds are up to 7.5 centimeters long with the short wing all around.
