Mashiko ( Japanese 益 子 町 Mashiko-machi ) is a city ( machi ) in the district (gun) Haga of the Japanese prefecture (ken) Tochigi , which has national importance as a pottery town.
The size of the community reached today in the Great Shōwa Territorial Reform, when the city of Mashiko merged with the villages (-mura) Nanai and Tano in 1954 .
Pottery in Mashiko
Pottery in Mashiko dates back to the Nara period , but then gets lost in history.
Today's development began in 1853 when Ōtsuka Keisaburō (大 塚 啓 三郎; 1828–1876), then only 26 years old, put on a kiln in Nekoya (根 古屋) and so revived pottery. The type of distillation - "yaki" - of Mashiko is derived from Sōma-yaki (相 馬 焼) and Kasama-yaki (笠 間 焼), with Ōtsuka also including the type of distillation of Fukute (福 手 村), a place nearby .
When the potter Hamada Shōji settled in Mashiko in 1924, this led to a revitalization of the local pottery, which continues to this day. His home and workshop can now be viewed under the name "Mashiko Reference Collection Museum" (益 子 参考 館, Mahiko Sankōkan). Today there are over a hundred pottery workshops in operation in Mashiko. In 1993 the "Tōgei-Messe Mashiko" (陶 芸 メ ッ セ ・ 益 子) was opened, a group of five buildings, among which is the "Mashiko Art Museum for Ceramics" (益 子 陶 芸 美術館, Mashiko kōgei bijutsukan). The woodcut artist Sasajima Kihei , who comes from Mashiko, was also given a museum there.
The Higetatei (日下 田 邸), a property declared as a cultural asset of the prefecture, was built by Higeta Kōya (日下 田 紺 屋) during the Kansei era (1789-1801) as a home and place of work. There is a vat (藍 甕, aigame) made as tokoname-yaki (常 滑 焼), which was used for indigo dyeing (藍 染 め, aizome).
