The cymbal herbs ( Cymbalaria ) belong to the plantain family (Plantaginaceae). They are closely related to the flax herbs and snapdragons .

description

Cymbal herbs are perennial herbaceous plants with thread-like, long, climbing or hanging stems. The leaves are usually heart-shaped or round. The zygomorphic flowers are spurred. Because of the long flower spur, the flowers are preferred by bumblebees.

Pale cymbal ( Cymbalaria pallida )

There are around ten species that are found mainly in southern Europe and the region of the Middle East:

  • Cymbalaria acutiloba ( Boiss. & Heldr. ) Speta : It occurs in Greece, in Crete and in the Aegean Sea.
  • Cymbalaria aequitriloba (Viv.) A. Chev. : The homeland is Spain, the Balearic Islands, Italy, Sardinia and Corsica.
  • Cymbalaria ebelii (Cufod.) Speta : It occurs in Albania and in the former Yugoslavia.
  • Cymbalaria glutinosa Bigazzi & Raffaelli : The home is Italy.
  • Cymbalaria hepaticifolia (Poiret) Wettst. : She is endemic to Corsica.
  • Cymbalaria longipes (Boiss. & Heldr.) A. Chev. : It occurs in Greece, the Aegean Sea, Crete, Cyprus and Turkey.
  • Cymbalaria microcalyx (Boiss.) Compet. : It occurs in Croatia, Albania, Greece, the Aegean Sea, Crete and Turkey.
  • Cymbalaria minor ( Cufod. ) Speta : It occurs in Greece.
  • Cymbalaria muelleri (Moris) A. Chev. : She is endemic to Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily.
  • (Wall) cymbal herb ( Cymbalaria muralis G.Gaertn., B. Mey. & Scherb. ): The homeland is Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Switzerland, but the species is also found in numerous other countries Naturalized earth.
  • Pale cymbal herb ( Cymbalaria pallida (Ten.) Wettst. ): The homeland is Croatia and Italy.
  • Hairy cymbal herb ( Cymbalaria pilosa (Jacq.) LH Bailey ): The home is Italy and Sardinia.

use

Actually a wild plant, Cymbalaria species are sometimes used in the garden. In the early 20th century, Cymbalaria muralis was even traded in varieties: “Compacta Alba” (with white flowers, shorter shoots), “Globosa” (significantly shorter shoots, more tolerable for plantings).
