Cyril Raymond Bence (born November 26, 1902 , † September 7, 1992 in Taunton ) was a British politician.

Life

Bence was born in 1902 to a family of artisans in South Wales . He attended Newport High School . As an adolescent during the First World War , he developed an aversion to violence and a pacifist attitude. Bence completed an apprenticeship with a balance manufacturer. In 1926 he married Florence Bowler , with whom he fathered two children, a son and a daughter. As a result of the worsening economic situation, the family was forced to move to Birmingham, England in 1937 . There Bence was involved in the local and national unions. After Bence's wife Florence passed away in 1974, he married again in 1975.

Political career

In the general election in 1945 , Bence stood for the Labor Party in the Birmingham Handsworth constituency . However, he was narrowly defeated by the conservative Harold Roberts . In the following general election in 1950 , he could not prevail against Roberts. After Roberts died around six months after the election, Bence ran for the last time in the by-elections in this constituency. This time, too, he could not win the mandate. It went to the conservative Edward Boyle .

After David Kirkwood did not run for the general election in 1951 , the Labor Party set up Bence as his successor in the constituency of East Dunbartonshire . The line-up in this secure Labor seat was the result of his trade union merits under pressure from the unions. Bence won the mandate with a share of the vote of 51.2% and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time . In the following elections in 1955 , 1959 , 1964 and 1966 he defended his mandate.

At the general election in 1970 Bence joined not more. His successor Hugh McCartney held the Labor Party mandate. A total of 3303 Bence 'contributions are recorded in Parliament.
