Annie was in jail for the murder of her abusive husband, Marco. After ten years, she comes back to her thirteen-year-old daughter Sophie and her mother-in-law Irène, who has taken care of the girl in the meantime. Annie's relationship with both of them is difficult. She got a job in a metal foundry, moved into her own apartment and hungered for life with a colleague. She fights for custody of Sophie and gets it from the court after difficulties.

The thoughts of what happened to Marco don't leave Annie in peace. Again and again she sees the events of that time in her mind's eye. The events come to a head at the former crime scene, a wooden house on an island. In an argument, Irène shoots Annie and wounds her shoulder. Sophie joins them. Annie sets the building on fire and Irène walks towards it. Annie and Sophie, who have grown closer in the meantime, move away from the place of horror together.
