The brown, 4 to 5 millimeters long and 10 to 13-nerved achenes have 10 to 15 millimeters long perigone bristles .
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 54.
Occurrence
Carduus tenuiflorus is native to southern and western Europe and has spread from there to central Europe, North and South America, South Africa, northern India (Kashmir) and Australia.
Carduus tenuiflorus grows mainly on disturbed locations, on dry, nitrogen-rich soils at roadsides and in pastures . It occurs in plant communities of the Sisymbrion Union .
Possible confusion
With Carduus pycnocephalus L. from the Mediterranean area, the common German name thin-headed thistle is also sometimes used.
