DB class 399

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Narrow-gauge small locomotives were designated as class 399 according to the joint series scheme of the Bundesbahn and Reichsbahn . The series was taken over by Deutsche Bahn AG.

A distinction is made between three number ranges for the different gauges: Locomotives with a gauge of 1000 mm are assigned ordinal numbers between 101 and 199, while the DB locomotives are assigned ordinal numbers 101 to 109, and the DR locomotives are assigned numbers from 110. For 600 mm gauges, numbers were assigned between 601 and 699 and numbers between 701 and 799 for 750 mm gauge.

Only one series (the new locomotives of the Inselbahn Wangerooge ) were delivered directly to Deutsche Bahn AG, all other locomotives were taken over by the predecessor companies DB and DR and most of them were sold on shortly after the merger. As of 2007, the 399 class comprised locomotives 399 105-108.

The four old locomotives of the 329 series of the Wangerooger Inselbahn that were taken over by the Deutsche Bundesbahn were given the numbers 399 101-104 in 1992. They were shut down in 1999 and 2000, but all have been preserved.

Even before DB AG was founded, in 1992 the Deutsche Bundesbahn acquired two three-axle L18H-C small locomotives from the Romanian manufacturer FAUR from the former Mansfeld combine for use on the Wangerooge island railway. They were initially supposed to support the class 329 old locomotives, but could not meet the expectations placed on them. To this day, they are usually kept for short freight trains and as a reserve for passenger trains when the other locomotives 399 107 and 399 108 are not available.

399 107-108

In the course of the modernization of the Wangerooger Inselbahn, the DB procured two new train sets in 1992/93, which were initially still used with the old locomotives because of the problems with the Romanian small locomotives. In 1999 the Schöma company in Diepholz finally delivered two two-axis machines of the type CFL150DCL with an output of 166 kW (approx. 225 hp), which were referred to as 399 107-2 and 399 108-0 in continuation of the numbering scheme. At the time of delivery, three machines of this type with a different engine had already been in use on the Borkumer Kleinbahn for five or six years and had already proven themselves there. As a result, the Wangeroog machines took over almost all of the island railway's traffic and have been in daily use ever since.

In the Harz, too, the Deutsche Reichsbahn used three re-tracked small locomotives of the Kö II series, which, like all other vehicles, were sold to the Harz Narrow Gauge Railways in 1993. The series designation 399 was also not written on these locomotives, all three have been preserved, the 199 011 (399 115) was kept operational for the workshop in Wernigerode until October 2015, since then the reconditioned 199 012 (399 116) has been in use there.

The Deutsche Reichsbahn also had a locomotive that was built as a prototype for a series for Java . It too received the series designation 399 only on paper and was sold to the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen in 1993. The locomotive has been parked since 1997 due to lack of demand.
