The German Federal Railroad and later the Deutsche Bahn AG designated diesel locomotives from the Speno company as the 715 series , which were rented together with the rail grinding trains they hauled to work on the rail network. Some of these locomotives were temporarily referred to as the 267 series. The Speno company named these locomotives BB001 – BB008.

history

After the first trial use of a Speno grinding train in 1968, the DB decided to only use grinding trains from this company from 1971. Initially, two-axle locomotives from De Dietrich with an output of 280 hp were used. Since this performance was not sufficient, especially on inclines, Speno procured a total of four BB620 locomotives from the Compagnie des chemins de fer départementaux in Montmirail in 1973 . These were initially used with the old grinding trains , later two new trains were purchased. To meet the increased demand for locomotives, four more locomotives of the reinforced type BB800 were bought again in Montmirail in 1977. All eight locomotives were used with the Speno grinding trains not only in Germany , but also in other European countries.

technology

The series consists of two different, but very similar locomotive types. The first four vehicles belong to the type BB620, the others to the type BB800. In this case, BB denotes the axle sequence B'B ', the number following the approximate drive power in PS.

The design of the locomotives is based on the type BB400 produced in five copies from the 1960s, which was used on several French narrow-gauge railways .

Both locomotive types have a central leader stood between two approximately equal-sized stems, in each of which a 12-cylinder - diesel engine the company Baudouin the underlying bogie drives. In the original design, the outer axle of the bogie was driven directly and the second indirectly via coupling rods . In the 1980s, all the locomotives still in use were (ie BB002-BB008) from the drive means of coupling rods to new bogies with propeller shaft drive rebuilt. A Knorr block brake with an additional brake is available as a braking system .

As a special feature, the locomotives had a water spray system for extinguishing fires that can arise from flying sparks during grinding. On the front apron, below the triple peak signal, there were two more work lights for observing the rails.

On exchangeable boards, which were attached to the railing of the locomotives, on the one hand the Speno company as the owner of the locomotive, and on the other hand the designation "locomotive" and the name of the respective grinding train.

commitment

The first locomotives, like the grinding trains they carried, were only given a construction machine number. They were initially used with the "TM 615" and "TM 1005" trains that had previously been used with smaller locomotives. The use of the BB001 was ended after a short time due to an accident, the BB003 also ended its own before 1975.

On January 1, 1975, the other two locomotives initially received numbers in the 267 series, i.e. as regular diesel locomotives. The BB002 became the 267 001, the BB004 the 267 002. Also in 1975, a new grinding train with the designation "RR 1205" was put into operation, which was covered with the two locomotives as a "sandwich" .

The delivery of the second series followed a year later. The first locomotive, BB005, was initially designated as 267 003. The BB006 was not accepted by the DB until the beginning of 1977, but the number 267 004 was still planned for it.

At the beginning of 1977, the DB changed the designation of the locomotives to the 715 series, i.e. to the rail service vehicles . The previous order numbers were retained. Also in 1977, Speno put another new construction train called "RR 1455" into operation. As a result, only the two new grinding trains were used in Germany and, from the delivery of the 715 006 (BB008) in February 1978, each was hauled by two of the new locomotives. The 715 002 remained in reserve, while the 715 001 was removed from the DB portfolio.

The use of the two now oldest locomotives, 715 002 and 003, at the DB ended on December 1, 1983, they were then used by Speno in other European countries. From 1990 to 1992 both locomotives were refurbished at the Mecnafer company - a subsidiary of the Speno Group - in Porto Maghera ( Venice ) and were then used again by the DB. Here, however, the old serial number was not assigned, but the BB004 received the number 715 003 with a second occupation, while the BB005 was designated as 715 006 with a second occupation after the previous 715 006 (BB008) fell victim to a fire.

Thus, at the beginning of the 1990s, four locomotives (715 003–006) were again in service with the DB with two grinding trains. The two older machines (715 003 II and 006 II ) were initially based in Nuremberg, the other two (715 004 and 005) in Hanover. Later, both trains were managed by Gleisbaumechanik in Brandenburg / Havel. With the commissioning of new, self-propelled grinding trains, however, they became superfluous at the end of the 1990s / beginning of the 2000s, and were deleted from the DB inventory and parked.

Whereabouts

  • The first built locomotive BB001 was badly damaged in an accident in 1973 or 1974 and returned to the manufacturer. It converted this to meter gauge and sold it to the Chemins de fer de la Corse , where it was referred to as "locotracteur no 01", later 601 and BB406.
  • The last locomotive built (BB008, 715 006 in the first occupation) was also destroyed in a fire in 1992, and it was also returned to the manufacturer, where its track is lost.
  • The whereabouts of the BB003 (without a known DB number) after its use with the DB is completely unclear.
  • The machine with the number BB002 (715 001) was re-gauged to Spanish broad gauge (1668 mm) after the end of its use at DB and was used there with the "TRR 635 E" grinding train. Between 1997 and 1999 it was moved to the Mecnafer plant in Italy and was parked there until at least 2001. The further whereabouts are unknown.
  • Also in Italy, the track of the BB006 (715 004) and BB007 (715 005) is lost in 2006 after an interim use in Norway
  • Two of the four locomotives last used by DB, probably BB004 (715 002 in the first and 003 in the second occupation) and certainly BB005 (715 003 in the first and 715 006 in the second occupation) were bought by Rails & Traction ( in which the CFD is involved) in Raeren and converted to meter gauge and have since been used in Corsica with the numbers BB407 and BB408. Instead of the BB004, the BB007 can also have been converted here.

Individual evidence

  1. a b c data sheet for the 715 series at www.lokodex.de
  2. The year of construction is given as 1977, although there is evidence that it was in use as early as 1976.
  3. Locomotive number 267 004-0 was still planned, but was not assigned because the locomotive was not used until 1977. In addition, what has been said above also applies here.
