Market of Opportunities 2013

The 34th German Evangelical Church Congress took place from May 1st to 5th, 2013 in Hamburg . The Kirchentag took place for the fourth time in the Hanseatic city after 1953, 1981 and 1995. The host was the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany (Northern Church), which emerged in 2012 from the Northern Elbe , Mecklenburg and Pomeranian Evangelical Churches . Gerhard Robbers was president of this church convention.

From Thursday to Saturday, over 2,500 events were offered for around 119,000 permanent participants. The main topics of the program were the economy, interreligious dialogue and inclusion .

Solution

The slogan of the Kirchentag was “As much as you need” ( 2 Mos 16:18  LUT ). It refers to the miracle that happened to the starving people of Israel, who fell from heaven on their journey through the desert of manna , for each and every as much as he or she needed. The double message of the slogan is: “God takes care of you, there is as much there as you need” - but also: “Only use as much as there is!”.

The design for the Kirchentag campaign comes from the agency of the Hamburg designer Peter Schmidt , who, along with three other agencies and an artist, had applied for it.

Evening of encounter

The Kirchentag began on May 1st at 5:00 p.m. with large opening services at the Fischmarkt , on the Reeperbahn , on the Rathausmarkt and on Strandkai , in which 84,000 people took part.

From 6:00 p.m., 350,000 visitors flocked to the evening of the encounter; one focus of this event was the HafenCity .

Shortly afterwards, a serious marine accident occurred around 500 meters away: at 7.30 p.m., a fire alarm was triggered on the ConRo freighter Atlantic Cartier at O'Swaldkai . The first fire fighting attack had to be stopped because of the great amount of heat and smoke generated. The Hamburg fire brigade then took over the further fire fighting at 8:12 p.m., in particular the cooling measures carried out from the water. The conventional fire-fighting attack could not begin until May 2nd at 3:44 a.m. The fire was successfully extinguished 25 minutes later. Although the freighter loaded parts of ammunition, highly flammable substances and uranium hexafluoride , no hazardous substances were released . The cause has not been conclusively clarified.
