The album received very positive reviews throughout:
Anastasia Hartleib from laut.de gave #DIY the highest rating with five out of a possible five points. The album is "a masterpiece" and "one of the kind whose scope only hits you the second or third time, but then with full force". KitschKrieg productions delivered "the perfect sound carpet, somewhere between pop, nostalgia and exotic". Trettmann is not trying to “ride the wave of success”, but rather doing “that for himself” and creating “heartbreaking songs” like Billie Holiday or Grauer Beton .
On rappers.in , the album was rated 5.5 out of a possible six by the reviewer David. He describes it as “a single musical miracle” with a novel sound construct. Trettmann conveyed the topics presented in an extremely "authentic" way. It is "one of the most exciting albums of 2017" with a "lasting influence on German rap".
Alexander Barbian from rap.de also rated #DIY positively. KitschKrieg productions delivered an “unmistakably clear sound” “between a proportioned touch of autotune and wavy synth vibrations”. In addition, the album shines “thanks to its high-contrast diversity of content” with an “extremely wide range of topics”. Trettmann is "in spite of his routine and experience, not a millimeter behind a freshly baked newcomer in terms of energy and liveliness".
Florian Peking from MZEE also praised in his criticism that Trettmann and KitschKrieg started with the album where they had left off with their last EP together. He comes to the conclusion that the musicians had already "developed a functioning sound concept on the previous releases, but are constantly expanding it." With this and with Trettmann's "authentic songwriting", they succeeded in "making their own creative notch in the German rap landscape" to beat.
