DJ Project is a Romanian music duo from Timișoara specializing in electronic pop and dance music, which was founded in 2000. The current line-up consists of the two music producers Gino Manzotti and DJ Maxx as well as the singer Andia.
The group became known both nationally and internationally in the 2000s and early 2010s with songs like Lumea ta , Privirea ta , Șoapte , Nu , Regrete , Mi-e dor de noi and Bun Rămas . Today DJ Project is one of the most popular and successful bands in the Romanian-speaking area.
history
2000 to 2009
At the beginning of 2000, Gino Manzotti (real name Handke Giuseppe ) and DJ Maxx (real name Ovidiu Florea Nicolae ) met in Timișoara. The two of them founded a pop duo in October 2000 under the name DJ Project .
After the founding, both producers were looking for a female voice. The decision fell on Ellie White (real name Elena Baltagan ); this also marked the beginning of Ellie White's singing career. A few months later, the group of three came under contract with the music label Sony Music Media Services . In the early days mainly in-house productions were produced and published in Romanian, including the songs Te chem , În lumea ta and Spune-mi tot ce vrei .
A year later, in 2001, DJ Project released the first album Experience , which initially achieved only moderate success. With Claudia Pavel , a second female front voice was added in 2002; this gave the group a new look. The following year Pavel left the group again to concentrate on future solo projects.
After Pavel's exit, the album Lumea ta ("Your World") came on the market, which was noticeably more successful than the first album Experience . The single Lumea ta , produced and released a year later, stayed in the Romanian Top 100 for 40 weeks.
In 2005 the fourth album Șoapte ("Whispering") followed, which was particularly successful in Romania. The two titles Privirea ta and Șoapte stayed at the top of the Romanian charts for several weeks.
In July 2006 the fifth album Povesta mea ("My Story") was released, on which there are 15 tracks, including the English-language song Before I sleep and a club version. Four months later, after a performance in Copenhagen, the band received the MTV Europe Music Award in the category of Best Romanian Nude .
The song Eşti tot ce am (“You are everything I have!”), Which has been produced and published in the meantime, is still popular with Romanian radio stations today. a. played by radio zu .
In 2009 Ellie White left the band to pursue a career as a solo artist.
2009 to 2011
After Ellie White's departure in 2009, Galați- born singer and DJ Giulia Anghelescu took up her position as the band's front woman.
Within three years, the duo recorded the songs Nu ("No") (2009), Regrete ("Rue") (2010) and Mi-e dor de noi ("I miss us") (2011) together with Anghelescu , which reached high chart positions in Romania, but also in other Southeast European countries, including Bulgaria . Anghelescu also worked on the first studio album Experience .
After three years, Anghelescu left DJ Project due to her pregnancy.
2011 to 2016
In 2011 DJ Gino Manzotti and DJ Maxx were therefore looking for a new front voice. It was by chance that they discovered Adela Popescu , who also works as an actress and has appeared in several Romanian telenovelas and television series. A year later, the single Bun Rămas ("Goodbye") was released, which reached number 10 in the Romanian Top 10 and sold many times.
In 2015 DJ Project started work on the ninth studio album Best of 15 Years , which featured the best and most successful titles, including Șoapte , Privirea ta , Încă o noapte , Hotel , Nu , Regrete , Mi-e dor de noi and Bun Rămas , the last 15 Years includes. The album was released that same year before Popescu left after five years of working together. As with Giulia Anghelescu, the reason for this was the impending birth of a child.
2016 to 2019
In the spring, DJ Manzotti and DJ Maxx announced that Adela Popescu would be leaving the group; Her successor was the singer and model Ela Rose (real name Manuela Chereji ) from Ștei . Manzotti already worked with David Deejay on Chereji's promo single No U No Love .
In April 2016, Sevraj, their first single, which was able to place in the Romanian charts, was released. After only six months, in September, Ela Rose ended her singing career with DJ Project for unknown reasons. A month later, the singer Xenia Costinar from Cluj-Napoca became a new member of the trio. The song Ochii care nu se văd , composed by Adi Cristescu and Chris Mayer , was released on October 13th and has since achieved 5.7 million clicks on the YouTube internet platform (as of 2020).
Towards the end of the year, Costinar left the group under unfounded circumstances. In December 2016, DJ Project announced to the public that they would be working again with Giulia Anghelescu , who had already played the role of singer from 2009 to 2011. The single O Secunda was released on March 3, 2017 . The song was published by the labels Cat Music , Mediapro Music and Sprint Music. Four months after the publication of O Secunda , the song Duminică followed in a duet with the singer Elena Gheorghe . A music video for Duminică was released on the video platform YouTube on July 6th .
At the beginning of 2018, DJ Gino Manzotti and DJ Maxx publicly announced on Twitter and Facebook that the singer Mira will take over the role of the front voice from spring onwards. At the end of February / beginning of March the song Inimă nebună was produced. The trio named the release date March 23, 2018. In the top ten charts, the song reached tenth place for a week. On November 18, the second interpretation appeared with Omnia , which however could not achieve a chart placement.
Since 2019
On March 5, 2019, the song 4 Camere was released in collaboration with the singer Ami . The song was released on the Global Records label; 4 Camere reached 12th place in the Romanian Top 100 charts . In the following months of April and May, DJ Project released four more mixed versions of the song.
In autumn 2019, singer Mira ended her collaboration with DJ Project and left the trio to concentrate on her career as a solo artist. DJ Manzotti and DJ Maxx then announced that singer Andia will take over the vocals from now on. Andia dedicated herself to music even before working with DJ Project and published a. a. also songs like Sabes tu and Lost . The song Retrograd was released on September 10, 2019 , composed and produced by DJ Manzotti, Alex Pelin, Achi and Vlad Lucan. Retrograd was released under the Global Records label and reached number 1 in the Romanian top ten charts in the first week. On the Shazam platform, the song was the most sought after interpretation from Romania; In January 2020, Retrograd was named the most played song on Romanian radio stations.
At the beginning of July, DJ Project and the singer Andia presented the song Slăbiciuni . They announced the release date on Twitter and Facebook. The song was officially released on Spotify on July 9th. Slăbiciuni has been available on the Deezer music platform since June 9th. The song reached number 7 on the Romanian Top Ten charts and stayed in that position for a week. Seven different mix versions were recorded for the song and released on May 1st.
