Elena Gheorghe (born July 30, 1985 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian pop singer.

Gheorghe was the singer of the Latin pop band Mandinga from 2002 to 2005 , with whom she released two albums. In 2006 her first solo album was released and from then on various pop singles that entered the Romanian charts. As the winner of the Romanian preliminary decision in 2009, she competed for Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow . She reached number 19 with her song The Balkan Girls .

life and career

1985 to 2001: early years and first musical experiences

Gheorghe comes from a church family. Her father, Gheorghe Gheorghe, is a priest and her mother Mărioara Gheorghe comes from a musical family. Her younger sister works as a journalist and her brother is a soccer player.

Already at the age of three she performed publicly with her mother and took singing lessons. During her school years in fifth grade, she qualified for a competition held in the Palatul Național al Copiilor in Bucharest, and later for various other competitions.

In 2000 she won the "Ursulețul de aur" trophy at a festival in Baia Mare for an interpretation of One Moment in Time by Whitney Houston . At the age of sixteen, Gheorghe took part in the Mamaia Festival and was the youngest participant.

She later took classical singing lessons at the Dinu Lipatti Music School in her hometown of Bucharest.

2002 to 2005: Mandinga

At the end of 2002 Gheorghe joined the Latin pop band Mandinga alongside Elena "Helen" Ionescu as lead singer. After joining, the group performed at various local concerts.

The first studio album ... de corazón was released on June 26, 2003; the single Doar cu tine ("Only with you") helped the group to become more well known. The album ... de corazón includes u. a. eleven tracks written and composed in different musical styles including jazz , salsa , merengue and cumbia .

In summer 2005 the second album Soarele meu (“Meine Sonne”) was released. It was awarded a gold record and sold around 15,000 times. With the track of the same name contained on the album, Mandinga qualified for the Romanian preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 , but were disqualified due to the participation criteria.

About a year later, in February 2006, Gheorghe announced that she would be leaving Mandinga to pursue a career as a solo artist.

2006 to 2007: Vocea ta and Dansez pentru tine

In 2006, together with her future husband, Cornel Ene and Ana Gheorghe, she founded a band under the name Pasitos , which quickly disbanded due to lack of success.

Four months later Gheorghe released her first debut single Vocea ta ("Your Voice"), which reached number eight in the Romanian Top Ten. In August 2006 she opened the concert of the Belgian band Vaya Con Dios in Mangalia .

In November 2006, Gheorghe took part in the Romanian dance show Dansez pentru tine , where she took third place in the main final with Cornel Ogrean.

At the beginning of 2007 Gheorghe brought out the song Ochii tăi căprui ("Your brown eyes"), which is included on her studio album. Ochii tăi căprui was voted the most popular song of 2007 and was the most played on the radio. Then she won u. a. the Romanian Top Hit-Music Award 2007.

2008: Second and third studio album

In autumn 2007, Gheorghe began working on her second studio album Te Ador ("I adore you") and released it in July 2008. The two titles on the album, Te Ador and the English-language The Balkan Girls , reached number 24 and number one a position in the charts. Te Ador contains eleven songs in the music genres Latino and Pop . The 7th track My Superstar is a collaboration with the Romanian singer Ciro de Luca from the band Todomondo , who represented Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 in Helsinki. At the same time Gheorghe moved to the record label Cat Music .

A few months later she released her third album Lilicea Vreariei , which was created in collaboration with the Romanian musician Gică Coadă and was released that same year. The thirteen songs on the album are composed in the style of Romanian ethnic and national music. The producer Laurențiu Duță worked on the album .

2009: Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow

At the end of 2008 Gheorghe recorded the song The Balkan Girls in collaboration with Laurențiu Duță and released it in January 2009. It reached number one in the Romanian Top 100. After the song of the Selecția Națională had been presented for the preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 , it was rated with 22 points. The Selecția Naționala thus chose Gheorghe.

After that, different versions of the song The Balkan Girls were recorded. Gheorghe published the official music video in March 2009. She also played the song at several of her concerts, for example in Berlin and London, where she a. a. met some singers, including Nelly Ciobanu , Lidia Kopania , Susanne Georgi and Kejsi Tola , who had also qualified for the 2009 ESC.

In May Gheorghe traveled to Moscow , where the Eurovision Song Contest took place in the multifunctional hall Olimpijski . In the first semi-final on May 12th, she reached 67 points with The Balkan Girls and thus came ninth. In the final, which took place on May 16, Gheorghe achieved 19th place with 40 points.

2010 to 2012: Disco Romancing

In May 2010 Gheorghe recorded the debut single Disco Romancing and released it that same month. Disco Romancing was number 4 in the Romanian charts for four weeks. In the Netherlands and Hungary the single reached number 3 and number 59. In the United Kingdom, it landed at number 199 in the British charts. A few months later Gheorghe presented her single Midnight Sun , which was able to build on the success of Disco Romancing after its release and rose to number 5 in the Romanian Top Ten.

In August 2011, the promo single Hot Girls was released in collaboration with singer Dony . The single became a commercial success and gave Gheorghe and Dony their first degree of recognition in Germany and Austria. In both countries, Hot Girls entered the top 100, in Romania the single reached number 30.

On December 31, 2011 Gheorghe gave a live concert in Câmpina with the band VH2 . Five months later she released the song Amar Tu Vida , which was successful in the chart parade in Spain and was later released as a different version in collaboration with the Romanian producer Bellido.

In November 2012 Gheorghe released her fourth solo studio album Disco Romancing , which u. a. published in Mexico, Italy and Spain. The album includes sixteen tracks, including two remixes of the songs Disco Romancing and Midnight Sun . The music producer Laurențiu Duță was involved in the production.

2013 to 2015

At the beginning of March 2013 Gheorghe published the song Ecou , which was created in collaboration with the rapper Glance and produced and composed by Laurențiu Duță . Ecou reached the top ten of the Romanian single charts for eight weeks and was voted the most popular “summer hit” of the year by various radio stations. After the song was released, Gheorghe received numerous awards and nominations, including the Romanian Music Award in the "Best Song" category. In September of the same year, the single Până dimineața appeared in a duet with the singer JJ.

A few months later, in April 2014, she released the song De neînlocuit . With Mamma Mia (He's Italiano) in collaboration with Glance Gheorghe reached the charts in Romania again, but the song was also able to place in the charts in other countries such as Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, Croatia and Poland. Within 24 hours of its release, the song received 150,000 views on the YouTube platform . In autumn 2014, Gheorghe started her “Mamma Mia Tour” across Southern and Eastern Europe. In countries like Italy, Spain and Poland she performed at some concerts. The tour ended in the first half of 2015.

The song În bucăți , which was released in October 2014 and was created in collaboration with Glance, hit the Romanian charts and had 1 million clicks on YouTube in one week. In December, the song Polul Nord (Brrr ...) followed in a duet with Adi Cristescu and UDDI.
