The Balkan Girls (in German Die Mädchen vom Balkan ) is a single by the Romanian singer Elena Gheorghe , which was released from a special edition (ediția specială) of her album Te ador . Gheorghe entered with this song for Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 in Moscow after she had won the national preliminary selection Selecția Națională 2009 . The song was composed by Laurențiu Duță.

Eurovision

The Balkan Girls won the Selecția Națională 2009 with a total of 3,503 votes ahead of Cătălin Josan and the Blaxy Girls . The latter were ahead in the telephone vote, but received only six points from the jury - half as many as Elena.

Since Romania is neither one of the Big Four of Eurovision nor was it able to win the previous year's competition , Gheorghe had to compete in one of the semifinals to qualify for the final. The song started at the first semifinals on May 12th with starting number 14 in front of Finland and Macedonia. It reached ninth place with 67 points and qualified for the final. There Gheorghe took 22nd place behind Ukraine and ahead of the United Kingdom on May 16. In the vote, half of which was done by telephone voting and half by jury evaluation , the song landed in 19th place out of 25 with 40 points. In the telephone vote, however, it was 14th with 64 points.

Promo tour

The song was recorded in autumn 2008 and on January 5, 2009 the music video was filmed in the studios of the Romanian television company TVR. After Gheorghe won the Selecția , the live version of the song was broadcast on the Romanian television channels TVR 1 , TVR 2 , TVR 3 and TVR International. On February 12, the singer announced that she would go on tour to promote the song and shoot a new video.

On March 5, 2009 filming began for Balkan Girls in Argeș County and in a club in Bucharest. On March 10, 2009, Gheorghe came to Germany and presented the new music video at the International Tourism Exchange in Berlin. She had a photo shoot, gave interviews, and was a guest on television shows.

Other goals of the artist were Greece , Albania , Serbia , Ukraine and Russia . She also met Nelly Ciobanu , Lidia Kopania , Susanne Georgi and Kejsi Tola .
