The steam locomotive series Yv of the kk Staatsbahnen was an Austrian tank locomotive . It was the only narrow-gauge locomotive designed by Karl Gölsdorf .
The kkStB procured three of these locomotives from Krauss in Linz for the opening of the first section of the Ybbstalbahn in 1896 . The name of this series of locomotives results from the first letter of the Ybbstalbahn, the "v" stands for the combined drive of the steam engine.
construction
The tank locomotives with the wheel order C2 'had, as with the already proven U series , an inner frame for the drive wheels, which was extended to an outer frame surrounding this bogie in front of the trailing axles combined in a bogie. The tires of the wheels on the driving axle had no flanges . This chassis construction should enable a good run with curve radii of 60 meters. The angle lever control developed by Karl Gölsdorf was used as control, a simplified version of the Heusinger control , which was used here for the first time. The locomotives were retrofitted with a pebble as a spark arrester at an early stage in order to avoid flying sparks when fired with cheap lignite.
The construction of the chassis did not prove itself with this locomotive, however, as it often led to derailments when reversing. This fact also contributed to the fact that no further copies of this series were ordered. As a result, the kkStB preferred the already well-proven and cheaper U series. The cause of the derailment was determined to be the rigid pivot of the trailing frame, which did not allow any vertical play of the running axles to compensate for unevenness in the track, in connection with the too rigid suspension of the axles. Johann Rihosek designed a conversion of the locomotives, which provided for a trailing bogie with an inner frame that was mounted in a ball pivot. In order to keep the locomotive in the track, the driving axle had to be equipped with a flange. With this conversion, which proved its worth, the wheelbase of the locomotive changed from 5,000 mm to 4,800 mm.
commitment
The three locomotives were ordered on November 25, 1895 from Krauss-Maffei Linz. As early as the spring of 1896 they could be taken over by kkStB. On March 18, 1938, the Deutsche Reichsbahn classified the three machines as 99.901–903. From 1953, the ÖBB referred to it as series 598 and used it on its home route in the Ybbstal until it was replaced by series 2095 diesel locomotives in the 1960s. There is also evidence of operations on the Waldviertel narrow-gauge railways and the Steyrtalbahn . The series was formally retired long after its last missions in 1973.
Today the former Yv.1 is located away from any narrow-gauge line as a monument in Eichgraben in the Vienna Woods, the other two machines are owned by Club 598 . Yv.2 was one of the first steam locomotives in Austria to be reactivated on a private initiative, the operational refurbishment of the Yv.3 is a long-term project of the owner.
