The Leibniz Institute German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (DSMZ), headquartered in Braunschweig is a scientific institution in the Leibniz Association , which as a collection strains of microorganisms (including more than 31,000 bacterial strains, 600 archaea strains, 6000 strains of yeasts and fungi , e.g. molds and 40 strains of protists ) as well as 800 human and animal cell cultures , 600 plant viruses , 600 bacteriophages and 250 plasmids (as of 2020). Jörg Overmann is the scientific director of the Leibniz Institute DSMZ.

tasks

By collecting microorganisms and cell cultures, the DSMZ acts as a service provider for university, non-university and industrial research in the life sciences . It also serves as a patent depository for biological material (9,000 cultures and organisms) in accordance with the guidelines of the Budapest Treaty . The DSMZ only has cultures from risk groups 1 and 2.

The DSMZ is also active in its own research in the context of its collection-related research and in the context of third-party funded projects (e.g. DFG). In 2012 the freely accessible database BacDive ( The Bacterial Diversity Metadatabase ) was set up, which is managed by the DSMZ and supervised as a curator . The database contains information on a large number of strains of prokaryotes ; in 2016, information on 53,978 strains could be found there; in 2019 there were already over 80,000.

The DSMZ also makes an important contribution to the systematics of bacteria and their taxonomy . In a Prokaryotic Nomenclature Up-to-date (German: nomenclature of prokaryotes to date ) designated freely accessible area of DSMZ- web presence , the valid scientific name of the bacteria and archaea can research, the list is based on the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology (IJSEM) and take into account the requirements of the 1980 International Code of Nomenclature of Bacteria (ICNB). From February 2020, the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (in German, for example: List of valid / valid names of prokaryotes ), maintained by Jean P. Euzéby and continued by Aidan C. Parte since July 2013, will be integrated into this offer .

development

The collection was founded in 1969 as the central "German Collection of Microorganisms" (DSM) under the patronage of the Society for Radiation and Environmental Research at the Institute for Microbiology at the University of Göttingen. The DSMZ has been based in Braunschweig since 1987 . It is located there in its own building on the grounds of the Braunschweig-Süd Science Campus of the Technical University of Braunschweig . Since 1996 it has been a service facility in the Leibniz Association under the acronym DSMZ.

Almost 200 scientists and technical staff currently work at the DSMZ. The registered office of the recognized non-profit company / non-profit organization is Braunschweig. In the anniversary year 2019 ( 50 years in the service of science: DSMZ ), the website was also relaunched : the institute's website is now in English. One reason for this is the international importance of the DSMZ, which is also reflected in the high order rate from foreign customers of over 70%.

The DSMZ belongs to global organizations such as the European Culture Collections Organization (ECCO), the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC) and the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).
