Daan Frenkel (* 1948 ) is a Dutch theoretical chemist. He is a professor at the University of Cambridge .

From 1966 Frenkel studied chemistry at the University of Amsterdam with a diploma in 1972 and a doctorate in physical chemistry in 1977 with Jan van der Elsken with the thesis Rotational relaxation of linear molecules in dense noble gases . As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), 1980/81 at Shell Research in Amsterdam and from 1981 to 1986 lecturer at the University of Utrecht . From 1987 he was at the FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics in Amsterdam and part-time professor at the University of Utrecht (until 2007), from 1998 also part-time professor at the University of Amsterdam (until 2013) at the Van t'Hoff Institute of Molecular Science and from 2007 professor for theoretical chemistry at Cambridge. He has headed the chemistry faculty there since 2011.

He uses molecular simulation methods to investigate the stability and formation rate of self-assembling molecular structures and materials. He calculated the complete phase diagrams of simple models of liquid crystals using advanced Monte Carlo methods (MC) for calculating the free energy. In similar investigations into the phase behavior of colloids, molecular chains and their mixtures, he developed a powerful generalization of the MC, Configurational Bias Monte Carlo . He later turned to nucleation during crystallization and developed new methods for calculating nucleation barriers and rates. He also applied these methods and extensions of them to the DNA-mediated self-assembly of molecules in the nanoscale. He also dealt with granular matter.

By 2016, he was the Boltzmann Medal awarded for his significant contributions to the understanding in the context of statistical mechanics of kinetics, self-assembly and phase behavior of complex macromolecular, colloidal and biomolecular systems through highly innovative simulation techniques (eulogy). The laudation also praised him as probably the most creative and diverse soft matter simulator of his generation.

In 2000 he received the Spinoza Prize , in 2007 the Wolfson Merit Award of the Royal Society, the Bernie Alder-CECAM Prize of the European Physical Society and the Aneesur-Rahman Prize , in 2011 the Joseph O. Hirschfelder Prize and in 2008 an Advanced Grant from European Research Council. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society (2006), a member of the Academia Europaea , a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry , the Third World Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2008), the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (1998) and of the National Academy of Sciences (2016). He is an Honorary Doctor of Edinburgh University and was a Bourke Lecturer at the Royal Society of Chemistry and in 2013 Hinshelwood Lecturer at Oxford. In 2018 an asteroid was named after him: (12651) Frenkel . In 2019 he is the holder of the Lars Onsager Professorship .
