The St. Pischoi Monastery (also spelled Bishoy , Pishoi or Bishoi ; Egypt.-Arabic .: Dair Anba Bischoi ) is located in the Wadi el-Natrun , in the Nitrian desert in the governorate of al-Buhaira in Egypt . It is the most famous Coptic - Orthodox monastery , which for the Holy Bishoi is named (320-417). It is the easternmost of the four existing monasteries in the Nitrian Desert. The current bishop and abbot of the monastery is Sarapamon (Serapis Amon).

The monastery was founded by St. Pischoi in the 4th century. On December 13, 841 ( Mecher ), Pope Yusab I fulfilled the wish of St. Pischoi and laid his body here to rest, as well as that of Paulus of Tammah . Until then, the bodies of the two saints were kept in the monastery of St. Pischoi in Dair al-Berscha .

Today the St. Pischoi Monastery contains the relics of St. Pischoi, St. Paul of Tammah, and a few other saints. Pope Schenuda III. was buried there.

The monastery has five churches, the main church being named after St. Pischoi. The other churches were named after the Virgin Mary , St. Iskhiron , St. George and Archangel Michael . The monastery is surrounded by a wall that was built in the fifth century AD to protect the monastery against attacks by the Berbers . A first castle was built in the early 20th century, but was later replaced by one of Pope Shenuda III. built four-story castle replaced. In addition, there is a spring in the monastery known as the Spring of the Martyrs . Coptic tradition has it that the Berbers cleaned their swords in it after killing the forty-nine ancient martyrs of Skete and later threw the martyrs' corpses into it. Later, the Christians buried the bodies near the monastery of Saint Makarios .

Under the now deceased Pope of the Coptic Orthodox Church, Schenuda III. , St. Pishoi Monastery began to expand by buying and developing new land around the monastery. Livestock , poultry and dairy farming were also established. Old buildings and churches were restored and the cells for the monks, retreat rooms, a residence for the Coptic Pope, extensions for a reception area, an auditorium, conference rooms as well as fences and gates were expanded. Schenuda III. was buried here after his death in March 2012.
