The Dalniy Vostok ( Russian Дальний Восток , transcription: Dalni Wostok, German: Far East) was a Russian deep-freeze factory trawler . On April 1, 2015, he was in distress in the Sea of Okhotsk off the Kamchatka Peninsula due to water ingress in the engine room and sank within a quarter of an hour without having made an emergency call. At least 56 crew members, mostly from Russia and Burma , were killed and 13 are missing.

An official investigation has not yet been completed. Publicly expressed suspicions about the cause of the accident tended, besides the collision with drift ice, above all to a loss of stability and capsizing of the ship due to malfunction or incorrect operation of the ballast tanks while the nets were being hauled in.

The ship was one of a total of 113 units counting series of freeze trawlers of the type Pulkovskiy Meridian (Project-1288), which were built between 1974 and 2011 by the Black Sea Shipyard ( Tschernomorski sudostroitelny sawod ) in Mykolaiv . The Dalniy Vostok was built in 1989 as a stand for the Rīgas traleru un refrižeratoru flotes bāze (about: Riga stern catcher and freezer fleet base). In 1992 the ship was transferred to the JSC Baltic Marine Fishing Company from Riga , flagged out to St. Kitts and Nevis and stayed there under its construction name until the end of 2014.

The factory trawler was driven by two six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines of the type 6PC2-5L-400 built under a Pielstick license by Russkiy in Leningrad , which act on a variable pitch propeller via a reduction gear . Each of the two main engines made 2576 kilowatts. Two generators with 1600 kW each and three generators with 200 kW each were installed for the energy supply. The hull of the ship was reinforced with ice.

The wreck was discovered in the summer of 2015 at a depth of 250 meters and is to be investigated with remote-controlled search vehicles, recovery is not planned.
