history

The name refers to a dam that used to lead from the dam bridge through marshland to Poststrasse to Fürstenwalde / Spree . Before 1860, there were 21 residential buildings and 50 farm buildings, mostly barns, in the former area of the Köpenicker Feldmark.

In 1860 the Dammvorstadt was founded as a settlement north of the old town of Köpenick. The entrepreneur and local politician Friedrich Wilhelm Oetting (1834-1892) provided the main impetus. In 1860 he bought a piece of land in today's Lindenstrasse from the timber merchant and lime burner Helwig, on which he built a sugar boiling plant, a syrup boiling plant and a corn starch factory. In 1862/1863 he built his house with a farm building in today's Joachimstrasse and in 1865 a chicory factory . He had roads and houses built for the workers for his company. From 1871 onwards, there was an increased settlement of traders along what is now Bahnhofstraße to Berlin-Mahlsdorf . A number of chemical and metal goods factories that employed around 1,000 workers were also located there. In 1881 today's Bahnhofstrasse was given more houses. This was also due to the fact that there was no longer enough space for residential construction in the old town of Köpenick with its island location. In 1895/1896 the bank Sörgel, Parrisius & Co. acquired and parceled out 119  acres east of Bahnhofstrasse and had ten new streets built with four-storey rows of tenement houses.

Today Bahnhofstrasse is the most important shopping street in Köpenick. The Forum Köpenick shopping center is located directly at Köpenick train station .

In the south of the Dammvorstadt towards the Dammbrücke there is a city park that was laid out around 1900 and has been called Platz des 23. April since 1945 (originally Heuplatz, Heumarkt from the 18th century ), on which there is a memorial for the Köpenick Blood Week .
