Circuit diagram of the Opatija circuit

The Yugoslavian Grand Prix for motorcycles was a motorcycle race that was held 30 times between 1960 and 1990 and counted 21 times in the motorcycle world championship between 1969 and 1990 .

history

The forerunner of the Grand Prix of Yugoslavia was held in 1946 on the Preluk street circuit in a sports complex in Opatija as a run for the Croatian championship. In 1947 the race was part of the Yugoslav championship for the first time. In 1950 the race was named Prize of the Adriatic ( Nagrada Jadrana ) and was also advertised for foreign runners for the first time. In 1960 it became the Adriatic Grand Prix ( Velika Nagrada Jadrana ). In the 1950s and 1960s, internationally successful drivers such as Nello Pagani , František Šťastný , Alano Montanari , Alfredo Milani , Florian Camathias , Fritz Hillebrand , Renzo Pasolini , Silvio Grassetti and Luigi Taveri entered the list of winners.

In 1969 , the Adriatic Grand Prix received World Cup status for the first time . In 1971 the race was not held due to bureaucratic difficulties after a change of organizer, in 1972 it was named the Yugoslav Grand Prix . In 1973 the Grand Prix was boycotted by the works teams of Yamaha , Harley-Davidson and MV Agusta after several serious accidents in the previous World Championship races and because of the dangerous Opatija track .

After Ulrich Graf and Giovanni Ziggiotto's fatal accidents in 1977 , the race was held from 1978 onwards at the nearby Grobnik Automotodrom near Rijeka, which was built specifically to maintain the Grand Prix .

In 1991 the end for the Grand Prix of Yugoslavia followed. The race planned for June 16 of that year was canceled due to the outbreak of the war in Yugoslavia and replaced by the European Grand Prix in Jarama , Spain . Since then, the Yugoslavia Grand Prix has never been held again.
