Dan Ross (born February 9, 1957 in Malden , Massachusetts , USA ; † May 16, 2006 in Haverhill , Massachusetts) was an American football player .

College football

Prior to his NFL career, Ross played football at Northeastern University in Boston. He was elected to the first team of the College Football All-America team . He was also considered one of the most outstanding players to have ever played for Northeastern University. Ross dropped out as the all-time leader in receptions (153), touchdowns (13) and yards (2343). He also holds the season record in these categories (68 receptions for 988 yards and 7 touchdowns). After Ross left university, No. 84 was shut down in his honor.

NFL career

Ross began his professional career in 1979 with the Cincinnati Bengals . He was drawn in the second round in 30th place in the 1979 NFL Draft by the Bengals. He was considered one of the best tight ends in the league and won the AFC Championship Game with the Bengals against the San Diego Chargers 27: 7 in 1981 . Until the end of his career in 1986 he played with the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers, among others .

Ross had a total of 263 receptions for 3,204 yards and 16 touchdowns in his time with the Cincinnati Bengals. During the Supers Bowls XVI 1982 he set a Super Bowl record with 11 receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns. So far, only Jerry Rice and Deion Branch have been able to beat this mark.

Honors

Ross once played in the Pro Bowl , the selection game of the best professional players of the season. He has been a member of the College Football Hall of Fame since 2004 . He is the first Northeastern University player to receive this honor.

Life after football

Ross became president and co-owner of WPWB , an independent television station based in Riviera Beach, Florida .

Dan Ross collapsed after returning from an evening jog . He died shortly afterwards at Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill. He left a wife and two grown children.
