Dana Fuchs (born January 10, 1976 in New Jersey ) is an American singer and songwriter whose music mixes southern rock , soul , roots music and blues . She also works as an actress.

biography

The youngest of six children, Fuchs was born in New Jersey and grew up in Wildwood, Florida . At twelve she sang in a gospel choir. Her father was an alcoholic and her grandfather died of suicide.

As a teenager, Fuchs was in an acting and a guitar group. She took drugs, dropped out of school, ran away from home and worked as a stripper . In New York , she worked as a secretary before starting stripping again.

She started group psychotherapy . A little later, her sister, who was addicted to alcohol and drugs, and her brother, who had a brain tumor, died. Death and loss became subjects of her music.

From 1998 Fuchs concentrated on the music, which is significantly influenced by Esther Phillips and Etta James . She performed in blues clubs, and after meeting Jon Diamond they formed the Dana Fuchs Band and released the album Lonely for a Lifetime in 2003 .

Her rough voice led to comparisons with Janis Joplin , and she also impersonated Joplin in the musical Love, Janis , which ran from 2001 to 2003. In 2007 she played Sadie in the musical Across the Universe .

The albums Bliss Avenue (2013) and Songs from the Road (2014) both reached the top 10 on Billboard magazine's blues album chart . Both albums were released on Ruf Records .

For the film SherryBaby (2006) Dana Fuchs wrote songs with Jack Livesey, which she also sang. In the 1990s and 2000s, she also sang for the MTV commercial on the radio.

After her time at Ruf Records, Fuchs founded her own label "Get Along Records". With the help of crowdfunding , she released the album Love Lives On in 2018 .

Dana Fuchs is an ambassador for the JED Foundation, an organization to fight suicide and support young people with mental health problems.
