Dana K. Chipman (born September 23, 1958 ) is a Lieutenant General in the US Army and a military lawyer . He was the Judge Advocate General of the US Army from October 2, 2009 to September 3, 2013 .

biography

Chipman graduated from HL Bourgeois High School in Gray, Louisiana . He then attended the United States Military Academy at West Point , received a Bachelor of Science degree, and was qualified as an infantry officer in 1980. He received his PhD from Stanford Law School in 1986. jur. and graduated with Master of Laws and Master of Science. He worked as a lawyer in various units, including a. in Schweinfurt , Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Fort Benning, Georgia .

As Colonel was Chipman until 2007 Staff Judge Advocate of the US Central Command , the top lawyer of the Regional Command , under the command of General John Abizaid and Admiral William J. Fallon used. He then took over command of the Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School , the training facility for Army military lawyers, with an appointment as Brigadier General in Charlottesville , Virginia .

In July 2009 he was nominated for the post of Judge Advocate General in the US Army. This nomination was confirmed by the US Senate . Chipman jumped a rank and was promoted to lieutenant general . He left office in September 2013 and was replaced by Flora D. Darpino , the first woman to hold this post.

Chipman's 2003 thesis at US Army War College was titled Countering Terrorism in the Heartland - Can We Afford Posse Comitatus Any Longer? (Eng. Counter-Terrorism inland - Should the Posse Comitatus be maintained?), in which he deals with the Posse Comitatus Act, which prohibits the armed forces from taking over police duties in the country. In it he comes to the conclusion that this law is no longer appropriate.
