Dancing in the Moonlight is a song by Sherman Kelly released in 1970 . It was interpreted as a cover version in July 1972 by the group King Harvest and was a single release of their second studio album of the same name, released in 1973. The song, written by band member Sherman Kelly, became the band's biggest hit, reaching number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The British band Toploader released their version of the song in 2000, which became an international hit.

Origin and first versions

Dancing in the Moonlight was written by Sherman Kelly in 1969 for his band Boffalongo , and recorded for their second album Beyond Your Head ; In 1970 it was released as a single. In the same year Dancing in the Moonlight was also sung by the group High Broom , but both versions were unsuccessful. Through Kelly's brother, the musician Wells Kelly, the band King Harvest , founded in 1971 by former Boffalongo member Dave Robinson, became aware of the song and Sherman Kelly became part of the group.

Version of King Harvest

Dancing in the Moonlight became King Harvest's most successful song at number 13 on the Billboard charts. In Canada it even reached fifth place in the charts. In 1980 King Harvest recorded a new version of Dancing in the Moonlight , which was not released until 2015 on the album Old Fiends .

The original version of Dancing in the Moonlight by the band King Harvest was used in the television series The Middle (episode Der nicht-Mutter-Tag ), in the final scene of the action comedy Killer's Bodyguard and in the credits of the horror film Annabelle 3 .

Version of toploader

The British rock band Toploader released a cover version of Dancing in the Moonlight in February 2000 as the third single from their album Onka's Big Moka , which was released in November 1999 . The globally successful song achieved top 10 placements in Ireland, Spain and the United Kingdom (7th in all three countries). In Germany, Dancing in the Moonlight reached 15th place in the charts. Especially in the UK, the song was able to achieve high sales and was awarded two times platinum. The version of Toploader can be heard in the films Nur mit Dir - A Walk to Remember and Four Lions as well as in the television series The Umbrella Academy (episode The Day That Did n't Exist ).
