Welcome to Chechnya is an American documentary produced by Public Square Films in 2020 by director David France about the persecution of lesbians and gays in Chechnya .

action

The film follows a group of Russian LGBT activists who try to smuggle lesbians and gays out of Chechnya in order to enable them to leave Russia .

production

A particular difficulty of the film arose from the need to protect the identity of the interviewees portrayed. David France, the director of the film, did not want to use the usual techniques such as concealing facial features or filming in the dark, as these would also have masked the emotions of his interlocutors. Instead, visual effects were used.

The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and was shown in the Panorama section of the Berlinale 2020 .

Awards

The film received the US Documentary Special Jury Award for Editing at the Sundance Film Festival .

As part of the Berlinale 2020 , the activists David Isteev, Olga Baranova and Maxim Lapunov portrayed in Welcome to Chechnya were awarded the Teddy Activist Award , which was presented for the first time in 2020 .

The film also won the Panorama Audience Award for best documentary film and the Amnesty International Film Award at the Berlinale 2020 .
