Dangshen ( Codonopsis pilosula ) ( Chinese 黨參 / 党参 , Pinyin dǎngshēn ) is a climbing plant from the genus Codonopsis . It is native to East Asia and is used in traditional Chinese medicine .
features
Codonopsis pilosula is a dense shrub that has a climbing tendency and can reach heights of 2.50 to 3.50 meters. The leaves are heart-shaped . The hermaphroditic , five-lobed bell-shaped blossoms that appear in June and August are light green with conspicuous yellow or light purple veins and are pollinated by insects . The seeds ripen in August or September, and the roots used in medicine are 1 to 3 cm thick.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.
Location and distribution
Dangshen grows on tree-lined brook banks and forest edges in Northeast Asia ( northern China - in the mountains also further south - Mongolia , Russian-Mongolian border area, Korea ). In culture, the plant also thrives in full sun.
