from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel Bacheler also Daniell Batchelar and Daniel Bachelor (born March 16, 1572 in Aston Clinton ( Buckinghamshire ), † January 29, 1619 in Kent ), was an English lutenist and composer of the late Renaissance.

Life

Daniel Bacheler learned from his uncle Thomas Cardell († 1621), a lutenist and "dancing master" at the court of Queen Elizabeth . Bacheler seems to have been acquainted with John Dowland , since he dedicated a work to him, the Galliard upon a galliard by John Dowland .

After 1601 Daniel Bacheler was Chamber Secretary to Queen Anne with the exceptionally high salary of £ 160, while other lutenists at court had to be content with £ 20 to 40. About 50 of his solo pieces have survived, only Dowland and Anthony Holborne have more lute solos . Furthermore, some works for mixed consort have survived.
