Daniel Dorff

Daniel Dorff (born March 7, 1956 in New Rochelle / New York ) is an American composer.

Dorff studied at Cornell University and received his master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania as a composition student with George Rochberg , George Crumb , Karel Husa , Henry Brant , Ralph Shapey , Elie Siegmeister and Richard Wernick . He also studied saxophone with Sigurd Rascher . From 1980 to 2002 he was bass clarinetist in the Symphony in C (formerly Haddonfield Symphony ), and since 1996 composer in residence there .

At the age of 18, Dorff won first prize in the composition competition of the Aspen Music Festival with Fantasy, Scherzo and Nocturne for saxophone quartet . His compositions have been performed by well-known orchestras in the USA as well as the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic, soloists such as Marc-André Hamelin (piano), John Bruce Yeh (clarinet), Jean-Pierre Rampal , Donald Peck , Mimi Stillman and Gary Schocker (flute) and under Conductors such as Alan Gilbert and Wolfgang Sawallisch performed. He composed orchestral and chamber music, choral works, pieces for solo instruments and several musicals for children.

Dorf serves on the boards of the Music Publishers' Association of the USA , the National Flute Association, and the Charles Ives Society .
