Daniel Jarque González (born January 1, 1983 in Barcelona , † August 8, 2009 in Coverciano , Florence , Italy ) was a Spanish football player who played for Espanyol Barcelona in the Spanish Primera División .
Life
Daniel Jarque came from the Espanyol Barcelona talent factory . In the 2001/02 season he made the leap over the 2nd team in paid football. Since then, he has made 173 league appearances for the Catalans and won the Copa del Rey in 2006 . In the 2006/07 UEFA Cup final, he lost to Sevilla FC on penalties with Espanyol .
Jarque was part of the Spanish junior squad from 2001 to 2005; with the U-19 he won the European title in 2002 .

Jarque, who was with his team in a training camp in Coverciano, a district in the east of Florence , and had been named the new captain of Espanyol a few days earlier, died of heart failure on August 8, 2009 during a phone call with his girlfriend . His girlfriend then informed teammate Férran Corominas , who found him dead in his hotel room together with the team doctors .

After his death, thousands of fans laid down flowers, candles and banners at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat , the new stadium in Espanyol.
