Daniel Nimham

Daniel Nimham (* 1724 ; † August 31, 1778 in Cortland (New York) ) was a chief of the Wappinger tribe . Until 1760 they lived east of the Hudson River about 80 to 180 km north of present-day New York City in the Hudson Valley . In the French and Indian War ( French and Indian War ) (1754-1763) fought Nimham on the side of the British. In his absence, the tribe was forced to relocate near Stockbridge, Massachusetts . After his return Nimham sued unsuccessfully against the expulsion, for which he even went to England.

Nimham returned to the Hudson Valley from Massachusetts for the American Revolutionary War . With his son Abraham Nimham he now fought against the Imperial State Crown . He died along with his son and 40 other tribe members in an attack in what is now Cortland (New York) on August 31, 1778.

A mountain in Putnam County (New York) is named after him, his trunk was named for the places Wappinger and Wappingers Falls . Nimham was possibly also a model or example in novels of the leather stocking series by James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851).
