Howard Daniel "Dan" Pfeiffer (born December 24, 1975 in Wilmington , Delaware , United States ) is a former US senior advisor on strategy and communications to President Barack Obama . He served Obama for many years, including in various press and communications roles during the 2008 presidential campaign, in Obama's re-election, and during the Obama presidency.

Education, job and life

Pfeiffer was born in Wilmington, Delaware, to Vivian Lear (nee Strange), a school teacher, and Gary Malick Pfeiffer, a DuPont CFO . He graduated from Georgetown University with a Masters degree magna cum laude . He began his career as a spokesperson for the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), an initiative launched by Bill Clinton's presidency . In 2000 he moved to the press office of Al Gore 's presidential candidacy.

After the 2000 election, he moved to the Democratic Governors Association and later worked for Senators Tim Johnson , Tom Daschle , and Evan Bayh . Pfeiffer also worked for Evan Bayh's 2008 presidential campaign until he announced his resignation in 2006.

On July 16, 2006, Pfeiffer married Sarah Elizabeth Feinberg, a senior advisor and spokeswoman for Obama's former chief of staff and future mayor of Chicago , Rahm Emanuel . They met in 2000 when they were both working on Al Gore's presidential campaign. In 2011 they separated.

In 2007, Pfeiffer was hired by Pete Rouse for the presidential campaign for Obama's re-election. Pete Rouse had hired him earlier when Rouse was Tom Daschle's chief of staff. Pfeiffer's first role was that of the press secretary for the presidential campaign. He was later appointed communications director.

After Pfeiffer was repeatedly treated in the hospital for stroke-like symptoms and diagnosed with high blood pressure in September 2013, he changed his eating habits - from diet coke and sweets to iced tea and brown rice with chicken.

After the 2008 presidential election, Pfeiffer was responsible for the Obama-Biden transition team's press office and was later appointed Deputy Communications Director of the White House . After Anita Dunn left the White House a year later, he was appointed White House Communications Director appointed. He held this position for the remainder of Obama's first presidency.

In January 2013, at the start of Obama's second term, Pfeiffer was appointed senior strategy and communications advisor. He took over most of the duties from David Axelrod and David Plouffe . Jennifer Palmieri took over his role as communications director .

On March 20, 2014, Russia imposed entry bans on Pfeiffer and 8 other Americans as a countermeasure to the US sanctions in the context of the Ukraine crisis .

Pfeiffer left the White House on March 6, 2015. He left the last of the closest confidante to counsel Obama since the start of his first presidential campaign in 2007. Shailagh Murray assumed his role as senior advisor to the President.

Dan Pfeiffer was the driving force behind the change in the White House's communication strategy towards new, primarily digital channels such as Funny or Die , Buzzfeed , Facebook , Twitter and Medium .

In June 2015, it was announced that he had switched to CNN television .
