Daniel Sarmiento Melián (born August 25, 1983 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria , Spain ) is a Spanish handball player .
Sarmiento, who plays handball for the French club Saint-Raphaël Var , is mostly used on the back center .
Career
Daniel Sarmiento started playing handball in his hometown. He later moved to the largest club on his home island, CBM Gáldar , for which he also made his debut in the ASOBAL league. However, when his club had to file for bankruptcy in 2003, Sarmiento moved to the mainland to BM Ciudad de Almería . He stayed there for four years before being signed to the top club Ademar León in 2007 . Scheduled to replace Claus Møller-Jakobsen , Sarmiento took responsibility when he was injured, but narrowly failed in the main round of the EHF Champions League at the German club THW Kiel . In 2009 Sarmiento moved to league rivals FC Barcelona . With Barcelona he won the championship in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 as well as the EHF Champions League in 2010/11 and 2014/15 . In 2013/14 he also won the Supercopa Asobal , the Copa ASOBAL and the Copa del Rey de Balonmano . Since the summer of 2016 he has been playing for the French first division club Saint-Raphaël Var Handball .
With the Spanish national team, Sarmiento became world champion in 2013 in his own country. He won bronze at the 2014 European Championships in Denmark . In 2018 and 2020 he was European champion with the Spanish team .
