Daniel Schenkel (born December 21, 1813 in Dägerlen , † May 19, 1885 in Heidelberg ) was a Protestant theologian.

Life

Schenkel made his studies in Basel and Göttingen. After the vicariate in Schaffhausen , he completed his habilitation in 1838 as a private lecturer in Basel, in 1841 he became pastor at the cathedral in Schaffhausen, in 1849 professor in Basel and in 1851 professor, seminar director and university preacher at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , who he also became rector in 1856/57 Board. As an influential theologian of the Baden regional church , he was a member of the synod several times and was honored with the title of Council of Churches. He died shortly after he retired.

  • The union profession of evangelical Protestantism. Frankfurt 1855.
  • Christian dogmatics from the point of view of conscience. 2 volumes. Wiesbaden 1858–59.
  • The character image of Jesus. Wiesbaden 1864; 4th edition 1873. This work brought the author an attack on his official position, which he said in his writings: For orientation about my writing 'The character image of Jesus' (Wiesbaden 1864) and Protestant freedom in its current struggle with the church reaction (Wiesbaden 1865) met.

At that time he was at the head of the Protestant Association , for the purpose of which his General Church Journal (1860 to 1872) , which appeared in Elberfeld, and his work The German Protestant Association and Its Meaning (Wiesbaden 1868) worked. At the same time he edited the Bible lexicon, real dictionary for manual use for clergy and community members (Leipzig 1869–75, 5 volumes).

Even the writer Arno Schmidt (1914–1979), a staunch critic of everything Christian, was impressed by Schenkel's work: "SCHENKEL, for example: 1 of the very few books that can reconcile a little with X = tum".
