Daniel Thellmann (born March 1, 1960 in Hunedoara ; † September 28, 2009 ) was a Transylvanian-Saxon local politician in Romania and mayor of the city of Mediasch from 2004 until his death . His transition from the German Forum to the Democratic-Liberal Party (PD-L) caused a stir in 2008 .

Life

After attending primary school in Hunedoara, he switched to the Petrol Lyceum in Medias in 1975. In 1979 he went to Kronstadt to the Polytechnic, which he completed in 1984 with training in industrial automation and computers. He married in 1983 and had two daughters in the years that followed. Until the revolution in 1989 he worked in Medias for the state factory " Emailul Roșu ", after which he founded his own company with his wife. From 1996 he became politically active in the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania and was its chairman in Medias. In addition, he was a member of the community council of the Evangelical Church in Medias. From 2000 to 2004 he studied political science at the private Spiru Haret University in Bucharest alongside his job . In 2004 he ran for the German Forum in the local elections and was then elected mayor of Medias through a coalition with the Democratic Party (PD). This was a particular political success of the forum, which in addition to Sibiu also provided the mayor of the second largest city in the Sibiu district. A large part of the vote came from the Romanian population of the city, as the Transylvanian Saxons only made up less than 1,000 people there.

After the PD merged with the Liberal Democratic Party (PLD) to form the Democratic Liberal Party (PD-L) in 2007 , Thellmann was able to convince him to run for the PD-L in the 2008 local elections; Thellmann was then confirmed as mayor in office. However, this led to a break with the German Forum. Klaus Johannis (Mayor of Sibiu), Paul Philippi (Honorary Chairman of the Sibiu Forum) and Ovidiu Ganț (Member of the Forum in the Romanian Parliament) distanced themselves from him and terminated further cooperation with the PD-L at national level. Daniel Thellmann then resigned all offices in the Democratic Forum. The consequence of this affair in the following year was that Klaus Johannis was under discussion as a possible Prime Minister of an anti-PD-L coalition of all the other parties represented in the Romanian parliament, but this was due to the resistance of the officially non-party president, who was close to the PD-L Traian Băsescu failed.

In February 2009 Daniel Thellmann was diagnosed with cancer; he then underwent surgery and chemotherapy. However, these were unsuccessful; on September 28, 2009 he succumbed to his illness. His Romanian party colleague Teodor Neamțu then took over the office of mayor in Medias.
