Daniel Thym

Daniel Thym (* 1973 in Tübingen ) is a German lawyer and professor at the University of Konstanz .

Life

In 1994, Thym began studying law at the University of Regensburg . After studying at the University of Paris X , he completed his studies in 1999 at the Humboldt University in Berlin with the first state examination in law. Thym then worked as a research assistant at the Walter Hallstein Institute for European Constitutional Law in Berlin with Ingolf Pernice . This activity was interrupted in 2001 by Thym's master's degree at King's College London , which he completed with the degree of Master of Laws . He then returned to Berlin to devote himself to his doctorate, which he completed in 2003. His doctorate was awarded the Humboldt Prize of the HU Berlin. From 2002 to 2004 Thym did his legal clerkship at the Higher Regional Court . After a stay at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law in London in 2005/06, Thym completed his habilitation in Berlin in 2009.

Since 2010, Thym has held the chair for public law, European and international law at the University of Konstanz as well as co-director of the research center for foreigners and asylum law (FZAA) there. He is a major scientist involved in the Constance Cluster of Excellence “Cultural Foundations of Integration” and has been a member of the Expert Council of German Foundations for Integration and Migration (SVR) since 2016 . In the spring of 2018, Thym had a controversy with Thilo Sarrazin about the 2018 Declaration and its assertion of a continuous violation of the law on the German borders, which he described as a "myth". Thym is a member of the federal government's expert commission on the framework conditions for integration skills.

His main research interests are in German and international migration law, European law and the international protection of fundamental rights.
