Dannhauser is a former mining town in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . It is the seat of the community of Dannhauser . The place is 1358 meters above sea level. It is located in the middle of the route from Durban to Johannesburg . There are transport links via the Johannesburg – Durban railway line and the N3 , which is eight kilometers away. The Ngagane and uMzinyathi rivers flow near Dannhauser.
Cattle and sheep are kept in the area around the city . It is also home to some of the largest coal mines in the KwaZulu-Natals. The city was named after Renier Dannhauser. Dannhauser was a German settler who bought the Palmietfontein farm from the Natal government in 1872 . The village was granted village status in 1937.
Today there are five farms in Dannhauser, namely Tweediedale, Gleneagles, Rocky Branch, Cornwall and Klipkuil. In Durnacol to the south-west, house and rental prices are very low because the coal mines are no longer in operation.
There is a post office, a bank, a pharmacy and some grocery, iron and household goods stores in the village.
