Jean-Marie Daniel Mwanga (born July 17, 1991 in Kinshasa ) is an American - Congolese football player.
Career
Youth and college
Mwanga comes from Zaire , what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His father was an opponent of the former dictator Mobutu Sese Seko and died during the civil war in 1997. His mother left him and his siblings, who grew up with their grandmother, in order to be able to start a new life in the USA.
Mwanga started his career in 2005 in his native DR Congo, in the province of Katanga with Gédéon FC, before moving to the USA in 2006. After moving to the United States, he attended Jefferson High School in Portland, Oregon and was part of the Jefferson Democrats Soccer Team. During the holidays he played club soccer for the local club Westside Metros Soccer Club. From 2008 to 2009 he attended Oregon State University and played college soccer for the Oregon State Beavers. In his freshman year he scored four goals in 11 games and was named the best junior player in the Pacific-10 Conference . In his second year he was voted the best player in the conference. He scored 14 goals in 18 games.

In the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, he was drafted as the first round pick by the Philadelphia Union . He made his debut on Matchday 1 of Major League Soccer 2010 . On May 15, 2010 he scored his first goal, securing a draw against FC Dallas . He was nominated for the MLS Rookie of the Year Award at the end of the season .
National team
He was granted US citizenship on June 24, 2013. He then expressed his intention to play for the United States national soccer team .
