The Darmstadt Rockets are a base and softball club from Darmstadt and organized in the Hessian Baseball and Softball Association (HBSV).

baseball

The Darmstadt Rockets were founded in 1986 as a baseball club, a softball department was added later. Since the Colt 45 Darmstadt , the Rockets were the first baseball club in Darmstadt. They played from the 1990 season on 6910 Field , a baseball field that the American Armed Forces built in 1990 in the area of the former Griesheim airfield . At that time, the club was the largest baseball club in Hesse with 70 members in five teams.

In the 1990 season, the first team of the Rockets played in the 2nd Bundesliga baseball. This season, the promotion to the 1st baseball league , which the Rockets belonged from 1991 to 1993, succeeded. The 1991 season ended with the Rockets in third place behind the Mannheim Tornados and the Cologne Cardinals and thus narrowly missed the play-offs . In 1992 and 1993 the regular playing time was finished bottom of the table.

The 6910 Field was classified by the DBV in the summer of 1993 as non-league because the risk of injury on the heavily used field was too great for the national players of the other teams. The Darmstadt Rockets then had to look for another suitable venue and therefore withdrew their team from the 1st Bundesliga. After playing for several years as a visiting team on foreign pitches or on substitute pitches such as the throwing field in the Bürgerpark , the Rockets joined the Post Sports Club SV Blau-Gelb Darmstadt eV as a department in 1997 and expanded the soccer field in Kranichstein into a base and softball field. Since then, the Rockets baseball players have played in the Regionalliga (most recently in 2005) or Association League Hessen, but they have not been able to match their playing strength from their Bundesliga times.

In 2008 the Rockets played in a syndicate with the reserve of local rivals Darmstadt Whippets , whose 1st team has played in the 2nd baseball league since 2009 and, although already qualified in the same year, they were promoted to the 1st Bundesliga in 2010 renounced. In 2010, the Rockets team played independently in the Landesliga Süd again.

Numerous select players emerged from the ranks of the Darmstadt Rockets who played in the youth and junior division as well as in the national team for adults. In the years 1995 to 2005, many young players left the club because they had no prospect of playing in a higher class again because of the standard of play. Some Bundesliga teams included players who originally played for the Rockets, while Nils Sliva, Frederik Kraft and Daniel Czekalla came from the Darmstadt youth team.

Softball

In 2010 the Darmstadt Rockets softball team played for the fourth year in a row in the Softball Bundesliga . The team was trained by Matthias Neudörfl until mid-2009, since then Katja Sliva has been the trainer. The Rockets have been part of the 1st softball league since 2007. At the end of the 2006 season, the Straussberg PeeJays were defeated in the relegation games for promotion to the Bundesliga . In the first year , the team made it into the play-offs as fourth in the preliminary round, but failed there in the first round against the Hamburg Knights . In 2008 , the team finished fifth in the preliminary round, had to go to the play-downs and, thanks to the preliminary round results , was able to secure membership in the top division with a single win. The 2009 season ended last both in the regular round and in the play-downs, but in the relegation games the softball players managed to stay up for their fourth season in the Bundesliga. The second team of the Rockets played in 2008 like the men in a syndicate with the Darmstadt Whippets under the name Rocketdogs.
