The Dart River ( Māori Te Awa Wakatipu ) is a river in the Otago region in the southwest of the South Island of New Zealand .

The river has its source in the Dart Glacier in the Southern Alps and then flows partly in Mount Aspiring National Park in a south-westerly and then south-westerly direction. After 60 km it joins the north end of Lake Wakatipu west of Glenorchy . It got its name in the 1860s from the sheep farmer William Gilbert Rees because of its fast flowing water.

Several well-known hiking trails run around the river, especially the Rees-Dart Track, which follows the valleys of the Dart River and the Rees River to the east . Jet boat trips are available on the river .

Scenes from the Lord of the Rings trilogy were filmed on the Dart River , including Isengard, which was filmed at Dan's Paddock , and Lothlórien, which is in the woods a little further north.

On the upper reaches of the river in 1989 one crashed Britten-Norman Islander of Aspiring Air from where all 10 occupants were killed.
