action

The tournament

The sick Count Bobo von und zu Ebereck is hosting a tournament. The winner acquires the right to court the count's daughter Amaryllis. However, this does not agree and rejects the Burgvogt Hartmut von Fünfhausen, who emerges as the winner through fraud. But the knight Orlando von Syrakant, who appears shortly before the end of the tournament, emerges as the winner of the tournament and Amaryllis also takes a liking to him. Orlando woos the princess and eventually they both get engaged. However, when Orlando has to leave again, he leaves a friend, the ghost Lülü, behind to protect Amaryllis from the bailiff. Lülü meets new friends at Ebereck Castle, such as the eagle owl Grandük and the bat Flora.

The plot

Lülü haunts the castle at night and wishes to be a daytime ghost. When the bailiff tries to steal the count's treasure, Lülü thwarts this. The return of Orlando is heralded when the rose bush he left behind begins to bloom. Hartmut von Fünfhausen plans to do something and convinces the count that Orlando will not return and that he can court the princess instead. Amaryllis rejects the advertisement.

The raid

The count is getting sicker because the bailiff poisons him with his medicine. Hartmut sends his three henchmen to eliminate Orlando before his arrival. They set an ambush and take Orlando prisoner, but his squire Pipo escapes. The knight is thrown into the dungeon, where Lülü meets him again with Flora. Since Lülü and the bat cannot free Orlando themselves, they need help.

The Liberation

Lülü, Flora and Grandük have the problem that none of the people can understand them, so they cannot tell anyone about Orlando's capture. Lülü searches, but finds no one who understands him. Finally, Flora wakes up Hanschen, the cook's nephew. Lülü tells the child about Orlando's capture. At first nobody believes Hanschen, but then the castle servants find that he is right and plan to liberate Orlando. Meanwhile, Pipo also reaches the castle, but is also thrown into the dungeon by Hartmut's henchmen. Shortly before Count Hartmut becomes engaged to Amaryllis, Mademoiselle Hortense presents proof of the viciousness of the bailiff. The freed Orlando joins them and the castle bailiff is frightened by Lülü, whereupon his henchmen flee. Meanwhile, Lülü is transformed into a ghost of the day. Amaryllis and Orlando get married.
