action

Rome in August . It's hot and the Romans are fleeing to the countryside. However, Giovanni cannot go on vacation. The man in his fifties has to look after his old mother. He cooks for her and reads from novels to her. When the caretaker Luigi approaches Giovanni with a request, the peaceful life of mother and son changes. Luigi persuades Giovanni to take care of Luigi's mother for two days. Giovanni initially refuses; However, when he receives debt relief from the property manager in compensation, he accepts. But, surprisingly, Luigi's mother does not come alone. Aunt Maria has to do without her carer at short notice and also needs care. When Giovanni's family doctor finally delivers his mother Grazia to him because he has night shifts, a shared flat for the elderly is created for which Giovanni cooks. At first, the four old women do not get along and refuse to live together. With the Ferragosto feast , however, a lively get-together of the old women develops over wine and other delicacies. The women want this festival to never end.

Awards

The film received the Luigi De Laurentiis Award for the best directorial debut at the Venice Film Festival in 2008 and the David di Donatello in 2009 , also for the best directorial debut. At the London Film Festival in 2008 the film won the Satyajit Ray Award . The film was nominated for the European Film Prize in the categories of script and audience award.
